Moratorium there and Launching here..!

Moratorium there and

 Launching here..!

While America is thinking to put moratorium on Genetically Modified Food, India is moving towards Launching it. Why America is thinking to put moratorium on it?

Nethrakere Udaya Shankara

Within a week I got two forwarded mails warning about Genetically Modified Food (GM Food) from GM Free India which is launching a vigorous movement against the introduction of GM Food in India.

The first letter detailed about the Warning of US Doctors on the dangers of GM Food and their call to Avoid Genetically Modified Food.

The mail hints about the  country which developed, promoted, and ate GM food for a decade has also waken up to its dangers and requests to decide whether the GM Foods are 'necessary' or 'the solution to the world hunger' after reading this mail.

It points out that http://www.aaemonline.org/pressrelease.html has the press release and their position paper on GMOs can be accessed at http://www.aaemonline.org/gmopost.html

The details of the mail are below:

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine Calls For Immediate Moratorium on Genetically Modified Foods

Wichita, KS - The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) today (on 19 May 2009) released its position paper on Genetically Modified foods stating that "GM foods pose a serious health risk" and calling for a moratorium on GM foods. Citing several animal studies, the AAEM concludes "there is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects" and that "GM foods pose a serious health risk in the areas of toxicology, allergy and immune function, reproductive health, and metabolic, physiologic and genetic health." The AAEM calls for:

A moratorium on GM food, implementation of immediate long term safety testing and labeling of GM food.

Physicians to educate their patients, the medical community and the public to avoid GM foods.

Physicians to consider the role of GM foods in their patients' disease processes.

More independent long term scientific studies to begin gathering data to investigate the role of GM foods on human health.

"Multiple animal studies have shown that GM foods cause damage to various organ systems in the body. With this mounting evidence, it is imperative to have a moratorium on GM foods for the safety of our patients' and the public's health," said Dr. Amy Dean, PR chair and Board Member of AAEM.

"Physicians are probably seeing the effects in their patients, but need to know how to ask the right questions," said Dr. Jennifer Armstrong, President of AAEM. "The most common foods in North America which are consumed that are GMO are corn, soy, canola, and cottonseed oil."

The AAEM's position paper on Genetically Modified foods can be found at http:aaemonline.org/gmopost.html. AAEM is an international association of physicians and other professionals dedicated to addressing the clinical aspects of environmental health. More information is available at www.aaemonline.org.

And the Second Mail from GM Free India touches about the position in India  And appeals everyone to urge the Prime Minister of India to stop launching of GM food - Bt. Brinjal in the country.

Go through the mail contents:

Our last chance

You may be shocked but this is the truth. We just have one last chance to prevent this from happening to us. An unpredictable, dangerous Technology is soon to be tested out on all Indians.

The first Genetically Modified (GM) food – Bt Brinjal, will soon be Launched in India on a commercial basis. GM food is created by taking Genes from one organism like bacteria, spiders, frogs etc. and Inserting them into the genome (gene sequence) of another unrelated
Organism like rice, wheat, brinjals etc.

The insertion disrupts the genome and it is modified in ways one can’t predict. These unpredictable modifications can result in adverse health-impacts for those who consume GM food.

Studies with lab rats  fed on GM, linked GM to stunted growth, impaired immune systems,
bleeding stomachs, liver and kidney lesions etc. So, it is no surprise that majority of countries around the world have rejected GM food. The only proof in support of GM food safety comes from the companies themselves, who stand to gain from this?

It is time we stood up and refused to become lab rats in some genetic
Experiment of big companies. Send a petition to the prime minister
Now!
