Juvenile age reduced to 16 years in India at last
New Delhi: Juvenile Age reduced
to 16 years in India at last. The laws which applies for adults in heinous crimes
will now apply for Juveniles who reached 16 years and above. Indian Parliament
today, 22nd December 2015 passed the long waited Bill in the
backlash of Juvenile convict in 2002 December 16th Gang Raple at
Delhi was released on 21st December 2015 after Supreme Court of
India rejected the SLP to seeking stay to the release of the juvenile convict
in the case.
Supreme Court said it could not stay the release of juvenile in the absence of law. There were strong protests in Delhi against the release of Juvenile. The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill, which provides for lowering the age for trial from 18 years, was passed by Rajya Sabha with a voice vote after a walkout by Left parties which wanted it to be sent to a Select Committee. The bill was passed by Lok Sabha earlier. It was waiting for RS nod since long period.

Replying to the debate on the bill, Women and
Child Development (WCD) Minister Maneka Gandhi said the legislation was a
"nuanced" one and was much needed to act as a "deterrent".
