Sushma Swaraj Helped Indian Man to attend his own Wedding

New Delhi: Imagine you’re in Washington, D.C., and you’re getting married in a fortnight in India, but there’s a ‘minor’ problem – you’ve lost your passport in pardes and don’t know what to do? Of course, you apply for a tatkal passport almost immediately, but with wedding jitters driving you mad, you can ALWAYS count on Sushma Swaraj to save the day and your wedding.

This is what happened to Devatha Ravi Teja. On Monday, Devatha Ravi Teja, called out for the External Affairs minister’s help on Twitter, News 18 reported on Tuesday, 31st July 2018.

@SushmaSwaraj ji, I lost my passport in Washington DC USA. I have my wedding on August 13-15. Traveling on August 10. Please help me expedite my tatkal request and help me in attending my wedding in time. You are my only hope. Plz do the needful.
— devatha ravi teja (@devatharaviteja) July 30, 2018
The minister, of course, playfully scolded the man for losing his passport at a very "wrong time". However, she immediately ordered the Indian embassy in the US to help the man on ‘humanitarian grounds’.

Devatha Ravi Teja - You have lost your Passport at a very wrong time. However, we will help you reach for your wedding in time. Navtej - Let us help him on humanitarian grounds. @IndianEmbassyUS https://t.co/wxaydeqCOX — Sushma Swaraj (@SushmaSwaraj) July 30, 2018

The man and Twitter were full of praises for Swaraj.

Thank you @SushmaSwaraj ji. I will look forward for this. Really great gesture and it means the world. Thank you so much.

States agree to supply milk under Mid-Day Meal, Anganwadi schemes

States agree to supply milk under Mid-Day Meal,
Anganwadi schemes

New Delhi: Most states, including Rajasthan, have agreed to supply milk for two days a week through Mid-Day Meal and Anganwadi schemes in order to absorb surplus stock and ensure better prices to farmers, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Secretary Tarun Shridhar said on Sunday, 29 July 2018.

Farmers are in distress in key milk-producing states like Maharasthra because of fall in the procurement rate amid surplus milk production, piling up of skimmed milk powder (SMP) and white butter stock. There was a farmers’ protest in parts of Maharashtra ten days ago.

“We had asked states to arrange for supply of milk and milk products through schools and Anganwadi networks under schemes like midday meal. Rajasthan government has already confirmed that they have done,” Mr. Shridhar told.

Every state is keen to do it, he said. “It is matter of having adequate supply of milk. The states are still working on logistic issues like converting SMP to milk, storage and other issues,” he added.

Currently, the country has a stock of 2.30 lakh tonnes SMP and 60,000-70,000 tonnes of white butter.

Stating that the government is taking all possible measures to alleviate the distress of farmers, the secretary said import of whey milk powder has been hiked to 40% from 30% and also incentives have been provided to boost export of dairy products.

While these are short term measures, a long term policy need to be framed to ensure that such a situation does not arise in future for farmers, he said.

The top official observed that much of the focus so far has been on boosting milk production and not consumption.

Though the per capita consumption in India, the world’s largest milk producer, is above the global average of 330 grams, there is a scope for increasing the intake level to ensure nutritional security, he added.

As per the official data, milk production is estimated to have increased by 6.6% to 176.35 million tonnes during the last financial year. The government expects milk production to touch 254.5 million tonnes by 2021-22.

Hope Imran Khan's Govt Helps Build Terror-free South Asia: India

Hope Imran Khan's Govt Helps Build Terror-free South Asia: India

New Delhi: As official results of the Pakistan election confirmed Imran Khan’s PTI to be the single largest party, India on Saturday, 28th July 2018 hoped that the new government will work to build a better South Asia that is “free of terror and violence”.

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement to say, “We hope that new Pakistan govt will work constructively to build a safe, stable and secure South Asia free of terror and violence.”

Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, who is all set to become the new Prime Minister of Pakistan, addressed the nation on Thursday and said that he is willing to improve ties with India and end the blame game which has been detrimental to the sub-continent.
In its first reaction to Imran Khan’s coming to power, the Modi government on Saturday responded positively to his message and said that India desires “a prosperous and progressive Pakistan” at peace with its neighbours.
"I am a person who arguably knows the most people in India because of my days in cricket. We can resolve the poverty crisis in South East Asia. The biggest problem is Kashmir," Khan had said, suggesting that the two sides should come to the table to resolve it.

"We want to improve our relations with India, if their leadership also wants it. This blame game that whatever goes wrong in Pakistan's Balochistan is because of India and vice versa brings us back to square one," Khan said on the Kashmir situation.

He said good India-Pakistan relations will be beneficial for the entire region and suggested to increase trade ties between the two neighbours.

The India-Pakistan ties nose-dived in recent years with no bilateral talks taking place.

Maulana Held for Sexual Abuse at Pune Orphanage; 36 Children Rescued

Maulana Held for Sexual Abuse at Pune Orphanage;
 36 Children Rescued

Pune: In one of the biggest rescue operations carried out in the city, 36 children were freed from a Muslim orphanage in Pune's Katraj area after two of them alleged persistent sexual exploitation by a maulana.

The accused cleric was arrested by the police and booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act on Friday.

Two boys, both 10-year-old, had recently escaped from the orphanage and were found at the railway station by an NGO.

On being questioned as to why they chose to run away, the boys revealed that they were scared after a cleric, who visited the orphanage, sexually abused one of the inmates on several occasions in the name of education.
The accused, 21-year-old Maulana Rahim, was a teacher at the orphanage, which runs under the banner of Jamiatul Khairiya Al-Islamia Educational and Charitable Trust. The rescued children, all aged between 8 to 15, were forced to live in inhuman conditions with no toilets but plastic water tanks, said the police after they raided the orphanage.

The statements of the children were recorded by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). During investigation, it was found that all the children hail from Bihar and some of them are not even orphans, triggering suspicions of a child trafficking racket.

"We took the two boys to the CWC where they revealed that they were being sexually exploited by their teacher. We then approached the police and raided the orphanage," Yamini Adbe, Child rights activist told.

Death Due to Stone-pelting Also Lynching

Death Due to Stone-pelting Also Lynching

New Delhi: The high-level committee set up to examine whether the country needs a separate and stricter law to curb incidents of mob lynching, will also bring cases of stone-pelting under its ambit, Union minister Rajyavardhan Rathore said on Friday, 27th July 2018, CNN-News18 reported.

Rathore said, “Every violence should be shunned and condemned and you cannot politicize these incidents. When a cop is killed by a mob for doing his duty is also lynching and if someone dies of stone-pelting that is also lynching.”

The committee will consider all kinds of mob violence to device the new law.
The panel is expected to submit its recommendations to a group of ministers, who will then send it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi within four weeks.

Referring to a recent incident of a tourist from Chennai who died after coming being attacked by a group of stone-pelters in Kashmir,  Rathore said the four-member committee on lynching laws will be expanding its scope.

Rathore has further invoked the death of a Jammu and Kashmir police officer who was beaten up by a mob last year to drive home his point on broadening the scope of this committee.

Last year in June, Deputy SP (Security) Mohammed Ayub Pandith, who was in civilian clothes, was caught clicking pictures outside a mosque, following which the officer opened fire with his service pistol, injuring three people. He was caught by an angry mob and beaten to death.

‘UN at risk of running out of cash’

‘UN at risk of running out of cash’

United Nations: The United Nations is at risk of running out of cash, the UN chief has warned, urging member states to pay their mandatory contributions on time and in full to ensure that the world body can continue to deliver on its key mandates.

In a letter to UN staff, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he had written to member states regarding the troubling financial situation facing the United Nations.
Caused primarily by the delayed contributions of member states to the regular budget, this new cash shortfall is unlike those we have experienced previously, he wrote in the letter.

Our cash flow has never been this low so early in the calendar year, and the broader trend is also concerning: we are running out of cash sooner and staying in the red longer, the letter stated.

As of July 26, as many as 112 member states, including India, have paid their regular budget dues in full. India made a payment of 17.91 million dollars on January 29 this year.

At the end of June this year, the amount of money paid by member states for the 2018 assessment stood at around USD 1.49 billion. In the corresponding period last year, the amount paid to the regular budget was just over USD 1.70 billion.

So far this month, Iraq, Moldova, Japan, Lithuania and Mexico have paid their contributions, leaving the outstanding amount owed for 2018, at nearly USD 810 million.

A total of 81 nations are yet to pay their regular budget dues. These include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt, Israel, Maldives, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Seychelles, Sudan, Syria, the United States and Zimbabwe.

The United States is the biggest contributor to the United Nations, paying 22% of the USD 5.4 billion core budget and 28.5% of the USD 7.9 billion peacekeeping budget.
US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley had said that other countries need to “step up” and pay a bigger share, adding that Washington’s contribution will be capped at 25%.
Last year, the UN had agreed on USD 5.4 billion budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

The US had negotiated a reduction of over USD 285 million from the budget, saying the “inefficiency and overspending” of the UN are well known and it will “no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked”.

Mr. Guterres said he has appealed to member states to pay their assessments on time and in full, and highlighted the risk the current situation poses to the delivery of mandates and to the reputation of the organisation.

His spokesman Stephane Dujarric told journalists here that the UN fully understands that some member states operate on different fiscal timetables, but unlike in previous years, the cash flow has never been this low, so early in the calendar year.

He also said the UN does not have much financial flexibility and relies on member states to pay their dues on time and in full.

Dujarric added that the UN Secretariat would now be looking into ways of reducing expenses, with a focus on non-staff costs.

China Has Quietly Resumed its Activities in Doklam Area

China Has Quietly Resumed its Activities in Doklam Area

Washington: China has quietly resumed its activities in the Doklam area and neither Bhutan nor India has sought to dissuade it, a top US official has said on Thursday, 26th July 2018,  while comparing Beijing's actions in the Himalayan region with its manoeuvres in the disputed South China Sea.

China claims sovereignty over all of South China Sea. Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan have counter claims.

China is engaged in hotly contested territorial disputes in both the South China Sea and the East China Sea. Beijing has built up and militarised many of the islands and reefs it controls in the region. Both areas are stated to be rich in minerals, oil and other natural resources and are also vital to global trade.
"I would assess that India is vigorously defending its northern borders and this is a subject of concern to India," Alice G Wells, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia told lawmakers during a Congressional hearing while responding to a question on China's increased road building activities along the Indian border.
"As (India) ahead to its own strategic stability, it certainly helps drive and is a factor in driving closer partnership that we enjoy with India," Wells said in response to a question from Congresswoman Ann Wagner.

India and China have clashed repeatedly over territories in the Himalayas. Most recently Chinese and Indian troops faced off on the disputed Doklam plateau between Bhutan and China after the Chinese People's Liberation Army began building roads through the area, Wagner said.

"Although both countries back down, China has quietly resumed its activities in Doklam and neither Bhutan nor India has sought to dissuade it. China's activities in the Himalayas remind me of its south China Sea policies. How should our failure to respond to the militarisation of the South China Sea inform the international response to these Himalayan border disputes?" Wagner asked.

As the US looks to the Indo-Pacific strategy put forward by the Trump administration, Wells said it has been taken in light of the 'South China Sea's Strategy'.

"How do we maintain the region to be open, to have maritime security, to not have militarisation that would imperil the 70 per cent of global trade?" she asked.

"We need to do that by giving authority to sovereign nations to have choices in how they develop, to have choices in their partnerships," Wells said.

Congressman Ted Yoho, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Sub-Committee on Asia and the Pacific, raised the issue of China's aggressive posture in South Asia.

"What are your thoughts on what is the best way to counter China in that region?" Yoho asked.

US should not be seeking to compete with China dollar for dollar, Wells responded, adding that instead of a state lending on terms that may not be to the benefit of countries or their citizens, the US and its companies are providing USD 850 billion in foreign direct investment in the region, which is far more than what has been injected by China.

"We're trying to gather likeminded countries who can bring resources to the table, who can coordinate assistance and an effort so as to provide countries with meaningful alternatives," Wells said.

Troops of India and China were locked in a 73-day-long standoff in Doklam from June 16 last year after the Indian side stopped the building of a road in the disputed tri-junction by the Chinese Army.

Bhutan and China have a dispute over Doklam. The face-off ended on August 28.

Nitish Kumar Orders CBI Probe Into Shelter Home Exploitation

Nitish Kumar Orders CBI Probe Into
Shelter Home Exploitation

New Delhi: The Nitish Kumar-led NDA government in Bihar on Thursday, 26th July 2018 has ordered a CBI probe into sexual exploitation of inmates in a women's shelter home in the state.

The development comes a day after Leader of Opposition and RJD lawmaker Tejashwi Yadav alleged that Brajesh Thakur, the patron of an NGO which ran the shelter home, was associated with the chief minister's campaign team in Muzaffarpur during the last Lok Sabha elections. Yadav demanded a CBI probe into the matter.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday expressed concern over reports of girls being sexually abused in Bihar shelter homes and asserted that the Centre would consider a CBI enquiry once the State government made a request.
The RJD, on Wednesday, in the Bihar Assembly accused the ruling NDA of trying to influence the probe and demanded Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's resignation.
"In view of the spiralling rise in the incidence of crimes against women, especially young girls, we have decided to give slogan of 'NDA bhagao, beti bachao' during our statewide cycle rally beginning later this week", Tejashwi said.

Congress MLA Vijay Shankar Dubey also raised the issue in the House during the Question Hour and demanded a CBI probe.

More than 40 girls were lodged at the shelter home which was sealed in June this year when an FIR was lodged in the light of a social audit report by Mumbai's Tata Institute of Social Sciences which suggested that inmates were being sexually exploited.

The NGO running the shelter home has been blacklisted. All the girls have been shifted to shelter homes in other districts while the premises here have been sealed.

The list of World’s Most Admired People 2018 has been topped by Bill Gates among men and Angelina Jolie among women. It features Amitabh Bachchan, daughter-in-law and actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra in the respective categories. Gold smuggled in with ‘paste’

Gold smuggled in with ‘paste’

Hyderabad: A novel way was adopted to smuggle in gold from abroad and a passenger arrested at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad on Saturday, 21st July 2018.

Smugglers concealed gold in a paste of an unknown substance and tried to smuggle it into the city but it was foiled by sleuths of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. The consignment allegedly originated from Colombo and was being smuggled to Hyderabad via Madurai.

The DRI officials intercepted the passenger who arrived by Spice Jet Flight No. SG-1314 from Madurai at the arrival hall of RGIA. On examination, it was found that he was carrying two packages in his hand luggage containing the paste weighing 1,850 grams, which on further examination turned out to have a gold content of 1,120 grams.

During interrogation, he revealed that he was entrusted with the job of retrieving the ''gold paste'' during the domestic run of the flight, while it was brought by an associate in a flight from from Colombo to Madurai, so as to avoid Customs check at the international airport.

The passenger admitted to not having any documents to prove the legitimate purchase/import of the said gold, said a DRI official.

A total of 1.10 kg of gold, valued at 34.57 lakh, was extracted from the paste. It was seized under the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation was on, the official said.

Rahul can hug PM, people will not hug him in 2019: BJP

Rahul can hug PM, people will not hug him in 2019: BJP

New Delhi: The BJP on Sunday, 22nd July 2018, took a dig at Rahul Gandhi, saying the Congress president might forcibly hug Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but the people of the country would not embrace him in next year’s Lok Sabha election.

Meanwhile, The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has authorised party president Rahul Gandhi to finalise all pre-poll pacts ahead of the 2019 general elections, sending a clear message to potential and current allies as well as seeking to end any ambiguity on leadership issues.

The posturing of the highest decision-making body of the party aims to abrade perceptions and predilections of potential allies, who are reportedly more comfortable in dealing with former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

Attacking the Gandhi scion over his speech at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Sunday, BJP’s national media in-charge Anil Baluni said the people will reject him in the next general election.

In a series of tweets, he also claimed that the Congress had decided to contest only 150 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, while Mr. Gandhi was dreaming of becoming the prime minister.

“Heard that desperate and disappointed Congress at its meeting today has set a target of contesting 150 Lok Sabha seats, while its president Rahul Gandhi is dreaming to become prime minister,” Baluni tweeted in Hindi.

Referring to the Congress chief’s hug to Mr. Modi during the debate on the no-confidence motion against the government in the Lok Sabha on Friday, the BJP leader said it was done forcibly.

“Rahulji, you forcibly hugged Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament but people will not hug you in the 2019 general election. You should prepare yourself for bringing a no-confidence motion in 2024,” he tweeted.

Reacting to former prime minister Manmohan Singh’s attack on Modi at the CWC meet, Mr. Baluni said while the aim of the government led by the former was to increase corruption, the current NDA dispensation was aiming to double the farmers’ income.

Remains of Soldier Killed in Himachal Air Crash found after 50 years

Remains of Soldier Killed in Himachal
Air Crash  found after 50 years

New Delhi: A mountaineering expedition has located the decayed body of one of the soldiers on board an AN-12 aircraft of the Indian Air Force, 50 years after it crashed in the Lahaul valley of Himachal Pradesh while flying from Chandigarh to Leh, reports said on Saturday, 21st July 2018.

Built by the erstwhile Soviet Union, the plane — which was carrying 98 passengers and four crew members — went missing on February 7, 1968, after the pilot decided to turn around due to inclement weather. The plane was reportedly over Rohtang Pass when it made its last radio contact.

The discovery was made by a team of mountaineers during a cleanliness drive on the Chandrabhaga-13 peak from July 1-15, The Economic Times reported. The remains were found at the Dhaka glacier base camp, 6,200 metres above sea level.
Rajeev Rawat, the leader of the expedition group, said: "We were somewhat taken aback to come upon something we had not expected when we found the remains of the wrecked aircraft as well as the decayed body of a soldier at Dhaka Glacier."
"First, we stumbled upon parts of the aircraft, which was followed by the discovery of the frozen body of a soldier lying with its head down. The hand and hair were almost intact despite 50 years of the crash," he said.

Rawat said the discovery was made on July 11 but the army was informed when the team reached the first road head on its way back on July 15. "We did not touch anything, but took pictures and made a video and forwarded them to the army authorities," he said.

Talking about the possible factors behind the discovery, Rawat said less snowfall in the higher altitudes may be a reason why things buried long under snow were coming to the surface. He said parts of the wreckage and the bodies must be spread over an area of 2- 2.5 kilometres.

An expedition of the ABV Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali, had recovered the wreckage of the plane and the remains of a body in 2003, which was later identified as that of Sepoy Beli Ram.

Four years later, the army found three more bodies and till 2017, only five bodies were recovered.

Melania Trump 'Terrified' after She Shakes Hands with Putin ?

New Delhi: On Tuesday, 17th July, 2018, Melania Trump joined her husband Donald Trump, during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland.

But perhaps, FLOTUS wasn't too happy about it. A glance at her expression after she shakes hands with Putin kind of proves it.

While the two world leaders reportedly discussed how to improve relations between their nations and find a way of going forward, videos of Melania looking absolutely startled and maybe just a little appalled have gone viral on the Twitterverse.
Just for a split second in the video, Melania's face was a charade of emotions-none of which suggested any kind of happiness- as she shook hands with Putin.
However, this one second has been enough in whirling up multitudes of reaction from microbloggers world over.

Twitter has been speculating if Melania's eyes are screaming for help along with a bunch of other stuff:

However, this isn’t the first time the first lady’s expressions have seemingly spoken on her behalf. There was that time during the President’s inauguration when she went from smiling as Trump looked at her to immediately frowning when he turned away.

Soon after the video surfaced, the hashtag #FreeMelania began trending, and two camps seemed to form: Those who felt bad for Melania and those who believed she was complicit.

Vehicles of president, VP, governors, L-G must have registration numbers: Delhi High Court

Vehicles of president, VP, governors, L-G must have registration numbers: Delhi High Court

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday, 18th July 2018 ruled that vehicles of India’s top constitutional authorities like the president, the vice president, governors and lieutenant governors will soon have to get registration numbers.
The vehicles of these authorities need to get proper registration and shall clearly display the registration numbers, ruled the court, report said.

Currently, these vehicles, along with those used by the protocol division of the Ministry of External Affairs to transport foreign dignitaries, display only the state emblem of India and not the registration mark.

A non-profit group, Nyayabhoomi, in March filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, saying the vehicles stood out without the number plates and could be easily identified as targets by terrorists reports said.

The petition referred to an RTI response by the Ministry of External Affairs admitting that none of its 14 cars maintained by its protocol division were registered. It also said that the Rashtrapati Bhawan refused to supply the registration numbers of its cars on the ground that disclosure of this information would endanger the security of the state and physical safety of the president.

In a strong remark in its petition, Nyayabhoomi said, "The practice of replacing the registration mark with the State Emblem of India, instead of displaying them both, is arbitrary and symptomatic of the desire to rule rather than to serve."
