Sardha Scam: Bengal
Minister Steps down
Kolkata: West Bengal Transport Minister Madan Mitra resigned from
the State Cabinet on Wednesday, 18th November 2015.
The
development comes on a day when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI),
seeking for cancellation of his bail before the High Court, questioned his
continuance as a Minister.
Sources
at the Raj Bhavan confirmed that the Minister's resignation has been sent to
the Governor for his consideration.
Arrested
for his involved in the multi-crore Saradha scam, Mr. Mitra was granted bail by
a lower court on October 31, nearly 11 months after his arrest on December
2014.
'A desperate attempt'
Political
parties in the Opposition described Mr. Mitra’s resignation a “desperate
attempt” to prevent his bail getting cancelled by the court.
Chief Minister Mamata
Banerjee had refused to accept Mr. Mitra’s resignation and said that he would
continue to remain a Minister despite his arrest.
